Clyde-Savannah Girls Volleyball Team Celebrates a Point

Clyde-Savannah hosted Palmyra-Macedon on Oct. 19 for its annual Sets for Survivors volleyball game to recognize and rally around those who have been impacted by breast cancer. Clyde-Savannah won the first three sets to cruise to victory, but the greatest triumph that night was the check for $2,210 that the team presented to Upstate University Hospital.

Every year, all three of Clyde-Savannah’s volleyball teams (modified, JV, and varsity) come together to choose a hospital or healthcare setting where people are treated for breast cancer.

“Upstate [University Hospital] was chosen this year because one of our varsity players had a close family member who was treated there,” says Allison Denk, coach of the Clyde-Savannah girls varsity volleyball team. “The team wanted to recognize the nurses and staff at Upstate who work hard every day to make patients feel welcome and cared for.”

“As a team, we wanted to show our support for anyone who is battling,” says Larissa Walters, a senior and team captain on the varsity volleyball team. “We are grateful to have the opportunity to make a positive impact and support such an important cause.”

Throughout the season, the volleyball teams raised money through concession sales and by appealing to local businesses, who then donated cash, gift cards, and raffle baskets. The gift cards and baskets were raffled off at the conclusion of the game, with all proceeds going towards Upstate University Hospital. Not only does involving all three teams increase the amount of donations received each year -- it coincides with Coach Denk’s goal of building a strong and united volleyball program at Clyde-Savannah.

“Community service obligations apply to all three levels of our program,” says Denk.

With postseason play looming and stiff competition on the horizon, Clyde-Savannah’s volleyball teams are still finding the time to give back to the surrounding community and region.
